UCI MTB Marathon World Championships: 8th for Flückiger

Sep 23, 2019

The XCO specialist had decided for a long time to confront himself to the long distance specialists at the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships held in Switzerland.

The 22nd of September had been in Lukas Flückiger’s mind for a few months already. He trained especially for it building up kilometers and also took part to the Grand Raid at the end of August. His form has been good lately and motivation was high at the start.

Riding strong from the very beginning, Lukas Flückiger had things under control and everything was going according to the plan. He and his brother Mathias had a 30’’ lead at the foot of the last climb. But the last (20km and 700m of elevation) was a bit too much for the two XCO specialists who saw the marathon specialists closing the gap and overtaking them.

After more than 4h20 of racing (90km and 4’000m of elevation), Flückiger crossed the finish line in 8th place; as first Swiss and second XCO specialist.

“I feel a bit disappointed right now” he said after crossing the finish line “but I think I can be happy with the way I rode today and it was an amazing feeling to be at the front with my brother, chasing the rainbow stripes.”

Results:

  1. Hector Paez Leon (COL) 4:17’58’’
  2. Kristian Hynek (CZE) 4:18’24’’
  3. Samuele Porro (ITA) 4:19’11’’
